Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
Are you in 4th or 5th grade?
Are you a voracious Reader?
Do you excel at games like Jeopardy?
Do you love competition?
. . . then the Reading Bowl is for you!
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th and 5th graders at Pinevale Elementary School. The competition was created by Helen Ruffin, a media specialist in Dekalb County. She served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children’s Book Award nominee program. This literature program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia’s College of Education. The program inspired her to use the nominee books to encourage her students to read.
The "bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz bowl-like format. There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals, and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process.
The team is sponsored by Dr. Bess (LA Academic Coach) and Ms. Lawrence (Media Specialist). The team is also assisted by Mrs. Kayla Brown, Gifted Teacher; Mrs. Amanda Harrell, 2nd Grade Teacher; and Dr. Danielle Gibbs, ESOL Teacher. Official HRRB rules state that only 10 students can be on the team. We select the 'top ten' readers out of those interested based on the following criteria:
- Teacher Recommendation
- AR Quiz Scores and Lexile
- 10 Questions/Answers turned in for each book read so we can quiz each other
We meet every Wednesday from 3:45- 4:45 PM in the Media Center.
